Description:

This comprehensive class will take your knowledge of door closers to the next level! Topics to be covered include: door closer types, applications, mounting requirements and other requirements for doors with closers; code information affecting closer requirements including: Americans with Disabilities ACT (ADA) closer requirements, NFPA 80 code requirements for fire doors, building code door closer requirements, mechanical code requirements regarding closers, fire door regulations regarding venting (louvers) in fire doors and automatic door requirements. Additionally, installation techniques & tools will be covered for the following: parallel arm, regular arm, top jamb, floor closers and narrow-style overhead glass door closers, including marking the frame, drilling the door, mounting the closer and adjusting closers to meet sweep and latch requirements, closer opening pressure to comply to ADA, suggested extra parts to have in a kit for servicing closers.

A GPLA certificate suitable for framing will be awarded to each student.

About the Instructor:

William A. “Bill” Deahl has been teaching locksmithing since 1975. His background in locksmithing began in 1961, where he spent weekends & evenings working in his father’s lock shop until 1971. In 1971 he began working full-time for Magnolia Park Lock Shop in Burbank, CA and then took over the shop from 1974 through 1984. During this time, he received an Advanced Journeyman Certificate in Locksmithing from the State of California (Los Angeles Unified School District) in 1975, one of only 11 issued in total. Bill also earned a Lifetime College Teaching Credential 1975. Additionally, he has work from 1973-1974 for Falcon Lock Company in the keying department, started The Parts House – a part distributor for the lock industry, worked for LAUSD as a Hardware Specification Writer, Assistant Supervisor Lock Department & Hardware Inspector, Inspection Section until he retired in 2009. In 2018, Bill started Deahl Designs & Manufacturing, a locksmith distributor and hardware design company.
